What is CHARACTER COUNTS! Week?
CHARACTER COUNTS! Week is an annual celebration of good character in our communities. Each year during the third full week of October, schools, youth organizations, businesses and other groups celebrate good character and the importance of teaching basic ethical values to youth.
Who endorses CC! Week?
Governors, mayors and other public figures across the country officially endorse the Week each year. U.S. Presidents from both parties, and the U.S. Senate, issue proclamations. Members of the CC! Coalition also participate in and support CC! Week celebrations.
What are things I can do with my children during CC! Week?
• Focus on one Pillar per day during CC! Week. Reward your child for modeling the character trait with a corresponding prize such as a CC! sticker or wristband.
• Contact your child’s school to see what CC! Week events are taking place and if assistance is needed.
• Discuss prevalent issues (depending on age) with your child in the context of the Six Pillars.
• Focus on character during family discussions about schoolwork, friends, household chores, upcoming events, future goals, etc.
• Display a Foundations for Life maxim somewhere in the home daily. Allow for time during that day to discuss the quotation’s meaning.
• Contact your local school’s parent organization to propose coordinating a CC! Week event.
• Choose a community agency in need of help with your child. Volunteer or make a donation and discuss which Pillar was exemplified.
• Visit the “Free Teaching Tools” section of the CC! website. Incorporate these materials into time at home as they not only promote good character but also build academic skills.
